Eyelash Extensions- What are they and why the hype?

Updated: Jul 13, 2020

What are they?

Eyelash extensions are a beauty service in which artificial eyelashes are attached to individual natural lashes.

Why the hype?

Because they are beautiful, they save you time getting ready in the morning and they are versatile. If you want a natural look or a dramatic look, it can be achieved.

What should I consider before getting lash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are a luxury beauty service which accentuates your eyes. Before getting this service done you should consider two things:

  1. Am I looking for a one time service, or am I going to invest in fills to keep my lashes looking full?

If you are looking for a one time set, that's fine! They look great on special occasions and vacations. A typical eyelash extension set lasts for about 2-3 weeks before needing to be filled. Since the extension is applied to your natural lash, as time progresses you will see your extensions start to fall out along with you natural lash shedding cycle. Therefore if you want to keep your lashes looking full, you need to schedule regular fills.

2. Can I commit to caring for my eyelash extensions?

Yes, there is aftercare involved! I personally recommend clients to wash and brush their lashes daily. Why do you need to clean your eyelash extensions? Because eyelash extensions collect make-up and oils which your body naturally produces throughout the day. This build up can not only make your eyelids uncomfortable and itchy, but can significantly affect your retention, causing your extensions to fall out faster. Take care of your investment!

I've never had eyelash extensions, how should I start?

I always recommend clients new to lash extensions to opt for Classic as their first set. Classic is a lash extension set with a ratio or 1:1, meaning there's one extension for each one of your natural lashes. With this set, it's not too shockingly bold for your first time and if you chose to add more volume during your next fill, you are more than welcome to do so. This set will also get you acquainted of how to care for your lashes and clean them.

Are there risks involved?

As with most beauty services, there are risks involved. The biggest risk is an allergic reaction. This is usually caused by lash extension glue. To help curb the risk of allergic reactions I recommend a patch test to new clients. A patch test includes placing 3-4 eyelash extensions on each eye 48 hours prior to your service. The patch test can help predict if there is a possibility of severe allergic reactions, however it cannot guarantee that you are safe if you exhibit no reaction. Allergies can develop at any time, even if you've had eyelash extensions before.

What do you think about lash extensions and would you try them out?
